Wise Earth began with a simple conviction. Children need meaningful places beyond home and the conventional classroom where they can meet the world directly.

Our learning happens in forests, creeks, lakes, coastlines, workshops, gardens and community spaces across the Northern Rivers.

Some days a child is learning a particular skill from a mentor. Some days they are following an ecological investigation. Some days they are building, carving, writing, calculating, cooking, navigating, swimming, tracking or restoring habitat.

And some days the most important learning begins with something none of us planned to find.

What holds all of it together is simple.

Care for Self. Care for Others. Care for Earth.

Wise Earth is a nature-based education and homeschool-support provider delivering outdoor learning experiences across the Northern Rivers.

Different Wise Earth experiences carry different participation models. Some are parent-attended. Some are drop-off. Some combine practical, academic and outdoor learning.

Wise Earth is a third space. Not home, not conventional school, not passive recreation.

The rhythm is held. The day is not scripted.

Mentors arrive prepared with learning intentions, materials, environmental knowledge and possible projects.

A day may include morning circle, movement, walking, ecological investigation, tool work, craftsmanship, literacy or numeracy, shared meals, free exploration and reflection.

Plans may change according to the environment and the needs of the group. That is not a lack of planning. It is responsive teaching.

Child-led does not mean adult-absent

Wise Earth deliberately combines child-led exploration with capable adult instruction. Children choose, and mentors teach. Both are always present.

We do not remove every challenge from childhood. We help children learn to meet it.

Depending on the program, children may climb, balance, swim or wade, use tools, work around fire, move through bushland and navigate uneven terrain.

We distinguish risk from hazard

Our goal is neither unrestricted freedom nor the elimination of challenge. It is supported independence inside an actively supervised environment.

Wise Earth works deliberately in small groups. Our standard drop-off Bush School model operates at a maximum of:

Ratios are only one part of supervision. Mentors also weigh age, capability, individual support needs, group dynamics, terrain, visibility, weather, water, tools, fire and the activity taking place.

Active supervision looks like

Deliberate positioning, scanning, listening, holding awareness of where each child is, anticipating movement, adjusting proximity, setting boundaries and communicating between mentors.

Active supervision does not mean standing beside every child at every moment. Proximity changes according to the environment, the child and the activity.

The exploration boundary

Children are taught one clear rule:

If I can see the mentors and the mentors can see me, or I can hear the mentors and the mentors can hear me, I am safe to explore.

This is the general principle. Mentors still set specific boundaries for each environment.

Water is part of our learning environment, and it is treated with particular care.

Before children enter or explore around water, mentors assess depth, current, flow, recent rainfall, visibility, entry and exit points, environmental hazards, the children's abilities, the needs of the group and mentor positioning.

Water boundaries are set according to the conditions of that day. Supervision becomes more direct as risk increases. If conditions are not suitable, water access may be altered, restricted or stopped.

A familiar location does not mean familiar conditions.

Children behave differently in different environments. Wise Earth responds to the child we are caring for, in the environment we are responsible for, at that time.

Children do not need to be perfectly calm or perfectly independent to belong here.

Mentors may respond with greater proximity, movement, food, rest, reassurance, clearer boundaries, redirection or increased individual attention.

Behaviour tells us something. Safety still matters.

Where behaviour becomes unsafe, mentors will intervene.

Wise Earth is a group program

Our 1:5 model allows meaningful individual support, but ordinary enrolment does not include dedicated one-to-one supervision.

If a child begins to need sustained individual supervision beyond what the group model can reasonably provide, we will speak with the family. That conversation may lead to a supported transition, additional family support, modified participation, early collection or a different program arrangement.

Wise Earth mentors maintain First Aid and CPR qualifications appropriate to their roles.

When an injury is observed or reported, mentors assess the child and provide First Aid appropriate to the situation. Significant incidents or injuries requiring further attention are communicated to parents or guardians. Minor incidents may be discussed at handover.

Children should arrive prepared for a full outdoor day with appropriate clothing, sunscreen, hat, food and water.

Every child at Wise Earth has the right to:

• Feel safe.
• Say no, or stop.
• Ask for help.
• Tell us when something feels unsafe.
• Be listened to.
• Know their exploration boundaries.
• Know which adults are responsible for them.
• Be treated with dignity.

Appropriate Working With Children Checks are maintained for mentors engaged in child-related work. Mentor backgrounds and qualifications are published on our team page.

Seasonal extras

Swimmers, rash shirt, towel, waterproof clothing or warm layers, depending on the season and the site.

Locations

Wise Earth moves between natural and community environments across the Northern Rivers. Exact meeting points are sent directly to enrolled families through Hunti, WhatsApp or another designated family channel.

Together, by design.

Family Immersion is a parent-attended experience. The attending adult remains responsible for their own participating child unless another arrangement has been explicitly agreed.

Wise Earth mentors hold the program, the group direction and the broader safety framework.

Good outdoor education depends on good information.

Confidentiality

Information about another child or family is not ordinarily shared with unrelated families.

A strong community is not one where concerns never arise. It is one where concerns can be raised and addressed directly.
